THE CHAMP STRIKES BACK.
Filipe Toledo is back in the winner’s chair, having taken out the WSL Championship Tour event at Sunset Beach.
Toledo was on fire over the entirety of the event, disposing of Eli Hanneman, Seth Moniz, Caio Ibelli, Joao Chianca and finally Griffin Colapinto, on his way to taking the W.
Toledo employed an innovative approach rarely seen at Sunset, hammering out an array of mammoth carves and critical close out hits to consistently post scores in the excellent range and gain the win over Colapinto.
This latest win for Toledo marked his 13th tour victory since qualifying for the World Championship Tour back in 2009.
“I’m feeling super happy and grateful to be here right now,” said Toledo at the event presentation. “It’s a challenging wave and it’s a challenging spot to surf, but Hawaii is a spot where you always want to get better, evolve and win events. This win means a lot to me.”
Over the course of the event, Filipe chose to ride a SharpEye 77+ model surfboard, which he then paired with his large signature fins and signature traction.
Filipe is now ranked second in the world behind Jack Robinson as the CT heads to Portugal.
Huge kudos also goes out to Caroline Marks who finished in the women’s runner-up position behind Molly Picklum. Marks is now sitting in fifth position, heading into the next event.
